Beethoven: (1770-1827) Septet in Eflat, Op 20. Virtually all of Beethoven's chamber works to include parts for wind instruments were composed during the early part of his career, and the septet, which dates from 1799-1800, is his crowning achievement in this field. Indeed the fact that he wrote hardly any more wind chamber music after 1800 was probably largely due to the extraordinary popularity of the septet, which was talked about so much and became the object of so many transcriptions and arrangements that after a time the very thought of it set his nerves on edge!

Richard Strauss: (1864-1949) Til Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks One of Strauss's most loved works, 'Til Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks', a symphonic tone poem, was first performed in 1895. Til was a practical joker living in the 16th century, about whom much had been written by the time Strauss considered the character as a subject for an opera. He changed his mind and in 1894 began work on setting the tale for orchestra. The Tone poem is a rondo, with Til's escapades forming the episodes. The Origins of this arrangement for quintet (by one Franz Hazenhohrl) are uncertain, although it is known that Strauss arranged the tone poem for octet. |
