Peter Tanfield
Violin
Born in England in 1961, Peter Tanfield started the violin at the age of four. He studied in Germany, Israel, Switzerland and Holland where his teachers were Igor Ozim, Felix Andrievski, Alberto Lysy, Herman Krebbers and Yehudi Menuhin.
Career Summary
Active as a teacher in Britain, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Australia, Peter has organised, coordinated and delivered courses and chamber music programmes for festivals and youth organisations.
Peter came to Australia in 1998 to lead the Australian String Quartet. Until he left in November 2001 he dedicated himself to the quartet's development and teaching at the University of Adelaide, expanding the ensemble's national profile and making two films for the ABC. Moving to Hobart in December 2001 the focus in once more individual, not only in performance, but also through teaching at the Conservatorium and various community activities, putting energy into helping other and particularly younger musicians.
Research Interests
As soloist and chamber musician Peter has played throughout Europe, China, Japan, India, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, USA and USSR. He was a prize-winner at The Carl Flesh International Competition, International Mozart Competition and International Bach Competition among others. He has recorded numerous solo and chamber works for television and radio as well as CD. He has played for Chairman Den in China and the Sultan of Oman.
As soloist Peter has appeared with many major orchestras; the Philharmonia, City of London Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, West German Radio Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra of the RAI in Rome. As concertmaster he has also had extensive experience working with the BBC Philharmonic, RSO RAI Roma, W. German Radio Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Some of the various artists and composers Peter has worked and performed with are Astor Piazolla, Charlie Watts, Pichas Zukerman, Yehudi Menuhin, Charles Wuorinen, Arvo Paert, Graeme Koehne, Gary Carr, Carlos Maria Giulini, Itzhak Perlman.
